Who are you and what do you do?

I'm J a trans* artist, performer and curator. As well as making art around the trans* experience, I am also passionate about connecting with artists and making their works come to life through the presentation of those works.

Why From The Kitchen Table?

When the lockdown was flung upon us, we thought it would be for 3 weeks, not a full year, so my partner and I separated our workspaces, she would get the dining table and I would get the kitchen table. This imagery reflects not only the difficult workspaces we have to deal with during the pandemic, but opens our eyes to the public, community spaces we relied on due to the compact nature of London homes.

But why does it need an exhibition?

You are probably sick to death of hearing what a historical event this pandemic is, but it is and I wanted some record of art made during the pandemic that was made by real people who aren't able to rely on their art as their main form of income.

This record of the past year exists as a time capsule. Something to be enjoyed now, but in a year's time I'll be able to come back to it and reflect on the time before, during and after the pandemic.

It has been a time of growth for many artists who can't work due to pandemic. It has allowed them freedom, time and effort, in order to grow their practice.

However, it has also been a time of fear, angst, and loss for many.

It is hopefully a time of change, and of learning from past mistakes.

What things from the past year would you like to see retained after the pandemic?

Political involvement and knowledge of the people has increase exponentially.

When distractions return, I hope we can keep sight of what is important,

educate ourselves, stand up, and fight for what is right.

And finally, what advice do you have for someone who's struggling to make art right now?
