Daniel Akerele

Artist Spotlight

Who are you and what do you do?

I'm a 3rd year student and I study Bioscience. I work part time, I skate and I write short stories and poetry.

What inspires you to make art?

How & where have you spent Covid-19/lockdown?

I've spent lockdown at home and I've been going crazy. It's mostly been filled with assignments but I manage to sneak in some writing every now and then. Every couple of nights I go skating around Central London to stay sane.

This city is something special at night.

What things from the past year would you like to see retained after the pandemic?

I love how quiet and empty the streets have been. I doubt it'll stay that way but it would be lovely if we could have that more often.

How has the pandemic affected your artistic practice, temporarily and permanently?

I've definitely written a lot less because I haven't been able to spend a lot of time with the people I'm close to. I know this won't be permanent so I'm definitely looking forward to the pandemic ending.

And finally, what advice do you have for someone who's struggling to make art right now?

My friends mostly. The things they say and do in their daily lives inspire me to write.

Speak to other creatives you know and motivate each other if you can. I know reaching out to ask for help can be hard but if you manage to do it the effect can be amazing. I've often found a combined effort can yield stronger results than going solo.
